COURSE DETAILS
SCOPE
This course is required to be taken every 5 years for anyone holding an advanced firefighting certification WITHOUT 360 days of qualifying sea service in the previous 5 years to meet Section A-VI/3 and Table A-VI/3 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010, and 46 CFR 11.201(h)(l), and 11.303(e).
This model course aims to provide training in advanced firefighting in accordance with the assessments identified in STCW Code Table A-VI/3. The emphasis of the training is on organization, tactics, and command.
A mariner who successfully completes the course will satisfy the Advanced Firefighting training requirements of STCW Code Section A-VI/3 and 46 CFR 11.201(h)(1), and 11.303(e).
This syllabus covers the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention Chapter VI, Section A-VI/3 and Table -VI/3. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in advanced firefighting, a trainee will be competent to take command, organize, and train fire parties and control firefighting operations. The seafarer will have acquired a knowledge of fire prevention and an ability to inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment. He will also be able to investigate and report on incidents involving fire.
PREREQUISITES
In accordance with 46 CFR 11.303(b), an applicant for renewal of an STCW officer endorsement must provide evidence of maintaining the standard of competence set out in Table A-VI/3 of the STCW Code. Mariners who do not meet the requirement for one year of sea service within the past five years must complete an approved or accepted Advanced Firefighting course or an approved or accepted Advanced Firefighting Refresher course that provides assessments for all Advanced Firefighting competencies.
CERTIFICATES
A mariner who successfully completes the course will satisfy the
- Advanced Firefighting training requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(h), and 11.303(e); AND
- The standards of competence required by STCW Code Section A-VI/3 and Table A-VI/3, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 09-14 (Ch-1).
