SCOPE

Advanced Meteorology covers all topics in the applicable module of IMO Model Course 7.01, Master and Chief Mate. Additionally, this will satisfy the Seafarers Training and Certification of Watchkeeping (STCW) Code as amended Section A-II/2 and U.S. Coast Guard regulations every candidate for certification as Master and Chief Mate of ships 500 gross tons or more shall be required to demonstrate the competence to undertake, at the management level, the tasks, duties, and responsibilities listed in column 1 of table A-II/2 in the STCW Code as amended.

A mariner who successfully completes our Advanced Meteorology course will satisfy the Advanced Meteorology training requirements of 46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(iii) and 11.307(a)(3)(iii) for STCW endorsements as Master or Chief Mate on vessels of 3,000 GT or more and 46 CFR 11.311(a)(3)(iii) and 11.313(a)(3)(iii) for STCW endorsements as Master or Chief Mate or Master on vessels of more than 500 GT and less than 3,000 GT.

The following practical assessments performed during this course have been determined to be equivalent of National Assessment Guidelines TASK’s, as documented in: NVIC 10-14 Tasks For Master or Chief Mate on Vessels of 3,000 GT or More (Management Level) 7.1.A; 7.2.A; 7.3.A; 7.4.A; 7.4.B; 7.4.C

AND

NVIC 11-14 Tasks for Master or Chief Mate or Master on vessels of more than 500 GT and less than 3,000 GT: 7.1.A; 7.2.A; 7.3.A; 7.4.A; 7.4.B; 7.4.C

This course covers the requirements of the Seafarers Training and Certification of Watchkeeping (STCW) Code Chapter II, Section A-II/2. This functional element provides the detailed knowledge to support the training outcomes related to the Navigation at the Management Level.

Students completing this course will have the knowledge, understanding, and have proficiency in forecast weather and oceanographic conditions. Additionally, students will gain knowledge of forecast weather and oceanographic conditions:

  • Ability to understand and interpret a synoptic chart and to forecast area weather, taking into account local weather conditions and information received by weather fax
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of various weather systems, including tropical revolving storms and avoidance of storm centers and the dangerous quadrants
  • Knowledge of ocean current systems
  • Ability to calculate tidal conditions
  • Use all appropriate nautical publications on tides and currents
PREREQUISITES

This course is open to mariners seeking a certification as Chief Mate or Master on vessels of more than 500 GT.

There is no minimum entry standard prescribed for this course. Although the course is designed with the professional mariner in mind, it remains open for anyone simply wishing to expand his or her maritime knowledge. Candidates desiring the license must submit their completed application package to the appropriate U.S. Coast Guard Regional Examination Center for evaluation as prescribed by applicable regulations and policies.
