COURSE DETAILS
SCOPE
This course provides instruction and assessment in Basic Fire Prevention and Firefighting to meet the requirements of:
- Fire Prevention and Firefighting per the STCW Code, as amended Section A-VI/1
- Fire Prevention and Firefighting per 46 CFR 11.30(a)(2) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(2)
- Basic Firefighting per 46 CFR 11.201(h)(2) [Basic Only] and 46 CFR 11.201(h)(3)
- The firefighting requirements for a national tankerman endorsement in 46 CFR 13.201 (c)(3), 13.301(c)(3), 13.401(d), and 13.501(c)(3)
- STCW Code A-VI/1-1 as outlined in Table A-VI/1-2; AND the National Assessment Guidelines as outlined in NAVIC 08-14.
Upon successful completion of this Basic Firefighting course, the mariner will have received sufficient information and instruction to have obtained knowledge, understanding, and proficiency to:
- Minimize the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire
- Fight and extinguish fires
PREREQUISITES
This course is open to all mariners 18 years of age or older who are in good health and have the physical ability to perform rigorous activities during firefighting exercises such as:
- Conducting search and rescue of a life-sized mannequin in a smoke-filled space while wearing a full complement of firefighting gear weighing 50-60 pounds
- Extinguishing live fires while wearing a full complement of firefighting gear weighing 50-60 pounds
CERTIFICATES

Successful completion of this course and presentation of this certificate will satisfy the following requirements:
- Fire Prevention and Firefighting per STCW Code Section A-VI/1;

- Basic Firefighting per 46 CFR 11.201(h)(2 ) [Basic only] and 46 CFR 11.201(h)(3); and
- The firefighting requirements for a national tankerman endorsement in 46 CFR 13.201(c)(3)
