COURSE DETAILS

SCOPE

This course is required to be taken for anyone WITHOUT 360 days of qualifying sea service in the previous 5 years PROVIDED the applicant has previously held a STCW Basic Training (A-IV/1) endorsement.

This model course aims to provide the training in Basic Training and assessments relative to all competencies and KUPs in STCW Code Tables A-VI/1-1, A-VI/1-2, A-VI/1-3, and A-VI/1-4. Emphasis of the training is in organization, tactics, and command.

A mariner who successfully completes the course will satisfy the continued competency requirements for STCW Basic Training in STCW Section A-VI/1, 46 CFR 11.302(e) and 46 CFR 12.602(e).

Successful completion of this course requires the student to:
Successfully pass all assessments and score at least a 70% on all examinations.

PREREQUISITES

This course provides continued proficiency in Basic Training, provided that students have been previously certified per Section VI/1 of the STCW Code.

This course is for applicants who cannot meet the requirement for 1 year of sea service within the last 5 years, as described in 46 CFR 11.302(c) or 46 CFR 12.602(c). These applicants will be required to meet the requirements of 46 CFR 11.302(a) or 46 CFR 12.602(e) by completing an approved refresher training.

All mariners attending this course must be in good health and have the physical ability to perform rigorous activities during firefighting and pool exercises such as:

  • Jumping into a pool from a height of approximately one meter while wearing a PFD and immersion suit
  • Swimming a distance of approximately 20 feet while wearing a PFD or immersion suit
  • Staying afloat for approximately 1 minute without the use of a PFD or similar aid
  • Entering a life raft and righting a capsized life raft while wearing a PFD
  • Conducting search and rescue of a life-sized mannequin in a smoke-filled space while wearing a full complement of firefighting gear weighing 50-60 pounds
  • Extinguishing live fires while wearing a full complement of firefighting gear weighing 50-60 pounds
  • Performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on a mannequin

Any applicant who has successfully completed this Basic Training Refresher (RCMMAR-68) course will satisfy:

The Basic Training continued standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.302(e) and 12.602(e) for mariners who have previously held a Basic Training endorsement under STCW Code Section A-VI/1 but cannot meet the requirement for 1 year of sea service in last 5 years; STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Tables A-VI/1-1, 1-2, 1-3, and 1-4, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 08-14(Ch-1) all Tasks.
