COURSE DETAILS
SCOPE
This course covers the learning and practical objectives for a mariner to demonstrate continued knowledge understanding and proficiency of the minimum competencies for Basic Training as specified in Tables A-VI/1-1 and A-VI/1-2 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010, PROVIDED that they have been previously issued an STCW certificate and they also can provide evidence of one year of sea service on sea-going (inspected) ships within the last five years. Personal Survival Techniques: survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment. Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting – minimize the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire and fight and extinguish fires.
This course is approved by the USCG as satisfying the requirements of the STCW 2010.
A mariner who successfully completes the course will satisfy the continued competency requirements for Personal Survival Techniques and Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting in STCW Section A-VI/1, 46 CFR 11.302(d) and 46 CFR 12.602(d), provided that they have at least 1 year of sea service in the last 5 years.
PREREQUISITES
This course is open to all mariners who have at least 360 days of sea service within the previous 5 years and who have previously completed a Basic Training course.
A mariner attending this course must be in good health and have the physical ability to perform rigorous activities during firefighting and pool exercises such as:
- Jumping into a pool from a height of approximately one meter while wearing a PFD and immersion suit
- Swimming a distance of approximately 20 feet while wearing a PFD or immersion suit
- Staying afloat for approximately 1 minute without the use of a PFD or similar aid
- Entering a life raft and righting a capsized life raft while wearing a PFD
- Conducting search and rescue of a life-sized mannequin in a smoke-filled space while wearing a full complement of firefighting gear weighing 50-60 pounds
- Extinguishing live fires while wearing a full complement of firefighting gear weighing 50-60 pounds
CERTIFICATES
A mariner who successfully completes the course will satisfy the continued competency requirements for Personal Survival Techniques and Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting in STCW Section A-VI/1, 46 CFR 11.302(d) and 46 CFR 12.602(d), provided that they have at least 1 year of sea service in the last 5 years.
