This Basic Training portion of this course is a STCW course and is approved by the U.S. Coast Guard; however, the Yacht Introduction is separate and not a U.S. Coast Guard or STCW course and is purely informational.

COURSE DETAILS

SCOPE

This 5-day course is comprised of the 4-day STCW Basic Training course with an additional 1-day yacht familiarization class.

The STCW Basic Training course is considered a minimum entry requirement for anyone who wishes to work on yachts or in the commercial sector of the maritime industry. It is required by almost every employer to ensure that everyone working onboard has the basic safety skills and knowledge to provide a safe working condition and respond to emergency situations and conditions.

This 5-day combined course is designed to provide you with the STCW certification and familiarity needed to work on yachts.

The STCW Basic Training portion of the course is comprised of 4 modules:

  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Basic Firefighting
  • First Aid & CPR

The modules consist of classroom theory and instruction, as well as in-person practical assessments in a local pool and at our on-site fire field.

The Yacht Introduction and Familiarization Course consists of 1 day of class with an experienced yacht employee who will cover the following topics:

  • The Yachting Industry: Introduction to the People, Places, and Classes of Yachts
  • A day in the life of a person working onboard a yacht
  • Yacht positions, job descriptions, and expected salaries
  • Q & A with current yacht Captains, deck officers, engineers, stewardesses, and deckhands
  • Working on a charter yacht vs a private yacht
  • Yacht living arrangements, lifestyle, and accommodations
  • How to write a yacht CV/resume
  • Getting your first job aboard a yacht
PREREQUISITES

The prerequisites for this course are the same as the STCW Basic Training course.

This course is open to anyone 18 years of age or older, must be in good health, and have the physical ability to perform rigorous activities during firefighting and pool exercises such as:

  • Jumping into a pool from a height of approximately one meter while wearing a PFD and immersion suit
  • Swimming a distance of approximately 20 feet while wearing a PFD or immersion suit
  • Staying afloat for approximately 1 minute without the use of a PFD or similar aid
  • Entering a life raft and righting a capsized life raft while wearing a PFD
  • Conducting search and rescue of a life-sized mannequin in a smoke-filled space while wearing a full complement of firefighting gear weighing 50-60 pounds
  • Extinguishing live fires while wearing a full complement of firefighting gear weighing 50-60 pounds
  • Performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on a mannequin
CERTIFICATES

At the end of the course, you will receive a U.S. Coast Guard approved STCW Basic Training certificate which reads:

Successful completion of this course and presentation of this certificate will satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Basic Training per STCW Code Section A-VI/1
  2. Basic Training per 46 CFR 11.302(a) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)
  3. Basic Fire Fighting per 46 CFR 11.201(h)(2) [Basic only] and 46 CFR 11.201(h)(3)
  4. The firefighting requirements for a national tankerman endorsement in 46 CFR 13.201(c)(3), 13.301(c)(3), 13.401(d), and 13.501(c)(3)
  5. The first aid and CPR training requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(i)(1)

There is no additional certificate for the Yacht Introduction course.
