COURSE DETAILS

SCOPE

Most original Basic Training courses are 5-days in length, however, ours has been approved by the Coast Guard to be performed in 4 days; however, please note that the course exams are NOT an official class day and therefore not part of the class schedule and will be held on the Friday morning following class. There is no set time to come in and take the exam, but you may take them as early as 0800 and can leave once you are done.

The course combines live, instructor-led virtual lectures with in-person practical training. Lectures are delivered via Zoom during the first three days of the course, followed by hands-on practical exercises on the fourth day.

The STCW Basic Training course is considered a minimum entry requirement for anyone who wishes to work in the commercial sector of the maritime industry. It is required by almost every employer to ensure that everyone working onboard has the basic safety skills and knowledge to provide a safe working condition and respond to emergency situations and conditions.

This is the original training course required to obtain the Basic Training endorsement and is amended to the STCW 95 2010 amendments. It includes the four elements (Basic Firefighting, Personal Survival Techniques, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, First Aid/CPR) as described below.

Any applicant who has successfully completed this Basic Training (RCMMAR-65) course will satisfy:

  • The Basic Training per STCW Code, as amended 2010 Section A-VI/1
  • The Personal Survival Techniques per 46 CFR 11.302(a)(1) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(1)
  • The Basic Fire Fighting per 46 CFR 11.201(h)(2) [BASIC Only] and 46 CFR 11.201(h)(3)
  • The Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting per 46 CFR 11.302(a)(2) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(2)
  • The Fire Fighting requirements per 46 CFR 13.201(c)(3), 13.301(c)(3), 13.401(d), and 13.501(c)(3) for any tankerman endorsement
  • The First Aid & CPR requirements per 46 CFR 11.201(i)(1) when applied for within one year of the date of training
  • The Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities per 46 CFR 11.302(a)(4) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(4)

The practical assessments performed during this course have been determined to be equivalent to ALL of the National Assessment Guidelines TASKs, as documented in NVIC 08-14 Guidelines on Qualifications for STCW Endorsements In Basic Training (Formerly Basic Safety Training).
