SCOPE

This course provides instruction and assessment in to meet the requirements of:

  • 46 CFR 11.301(b) and 46 CFR 12.601(c) and Section AVI/1-1 of the STCW Code for Personal Survival Techniques.

Upon successful completion of this course the mariner will have received sufficient information and instruction to have obtained knowledge, understanding and proficiency to survive at sea in the event of a ship abandonment.

PREREQUISITES

This course is open to anyone 18 years of age or older, must be in good health, and have the physical ability to perform rigorous activities during pool exercises such as:

  • Jumping into a pool from a height of approximately one meter while wearing a PFD and immersion suit
  • Swimming a distance of approximately 20 feet while wearing a PFD or immersion suit
  • Staying afloat for approximately 1 minute without the use of a PFD or similar aid
  • Entering a life raft and righting a capsized life raft while wearing a PFD

A mariner who successfully completes this course will be considered to have met the competency standards of The Personal Survival Techniques training and competency requirements of STCW Code, as amended 2010, Section A-VI/1 and 46 CFR 11.302(a)(1) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(1) AND have performed all practical demonstrations as guided by the applicable section within the Basic Training NVIC 08-14
